Our cathedrals and churches are often decorated with carved stone work, some of it serving a purpose, some of it simply enhancing the building.  Corbels can be supportive blocks of stonework or they may be simply decorative.  At Southwark Cathedral these can be found inside and outside.

In 2018 a series of new corbels were installed on the building to replace some that had seriously deteriorated over the years.  Students from the City and Guilds of London Art School based in Kennington, south London, were invited to suggest designs for these corbels.

Amongst them Miriam Johnson designed a corbel depicting Doorkins the Cathedral cat who has been part of our community for over ten years.  We were delighted when her design was accepted and she was able to carve the stone.  The corbel brings a smile to our faces, we hope this copy will bring you equal joy.
